The Nature of Active Sites in the Pd/C-Catalyzed Hydrogenation/Hydrodeoxygenation of Benzaldehyde

Hydrogenations and hydrodeoxygenations represent two of the most important reactions in production both bulk fine chemicals. Despite wide long use metal-based catalysts for this reaction, there is still some uncertainty with respect to properties governing catalyst activity. Using hydrogenation benzaldehyde as a model paper, we disclose dominant parameters determining activity Pd nanoparticles supported on carbonaceous material (carbon nanoplates, GNP). In particular, several operating synthesis were varied order obtain materials differences such physico-chemical nanoparticle size, oxidation state surface exposure. A linear correlation between amount Pd(0) atoms was found; dependence, maintained after recycling, pointed out nature active site Pd/GNP represented by exposed species.
